Buchanan County has three supervisors, Ralph J. Kremer, Michael L. Ferreter and Ellen Gaffney. They are elected countywide. Each supervisor serves on 12-15 committees, all of which offer services to the county residents. The County budget needs to be certified to the State by March 15th each year. The budget is usually between 15 and 16 million dollars, depending largely on how many road projects we have. Traditionally we replace bridges and culverts each year along with some resurfacing of roads. Buchanan County has 960.72 miles of roads, 199 are hard surface, concrete or asphalt. Most of our roads can be graded or snow removed within a three-day period with the use of our 13 motor graders and 14 trucks. We are fortunate to have an aggressive engineer; his innovative idea to use railroad flat cars for replacing our bridges has saved the county a lot of money. We can typically do one of them for about $60,000 to $65,000 where a concrete bridge will run between $200,000 and $270,000, depending on size. We are also proud to have a committed Roadside Manager who works well with the Conservation and Roads Departments. With this cooperation, we feel our ditches and roadsides are becoming more beautiful. In 2006, the courthouse became handicap assessable and a new elevator was installed. The courthouse was sandblasted and tuck pointed and the parking lot was resurfaced. We put a new roof and siding on the Human Services building. A paved bike/pedestrian trail was completed at Fontana Park near Hazleton. In 2009, we will have a new bridge at Jakway for which we received a $400,000.00 grant. Our local bridge crew built a bridge on a Class B road using a railroad tanker car. 

On August 21, 2007 a bond issue passed for a new jail in the amount of $4.52 million dollars.  It will be built on the south side of the existing courthouse.

We have done extensive remodeling at the Food Pantry and the Human Services building.
