Environment Health

Buchanan County Environmental Health is a department of the Buchanan County Board of Health. This department was established in 1975 to promote, protect and ensure the health and well being of the citizens of Buchanan County, including both rural and non-rural properties.

Duties and responsibilities of the department include the following: issuing permits for new wells and septic systems and inspecting the same; testing wells for bacteria and nitrates; assisting with the plugging of abandoned wells and rehabilitating old wells; investigations of public health nuisances and complaints; coordinating services with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Northeast Iowa Inspections and the Iowa Department of Health.
