The Buchanan County Conservation Board is directly responsible to the residents of Buchanan County.  The Conservation Board consists of five county residents, appointed to staggered, five-year terms by the Board of Supervisors.  Members of the Board are appointed on the basis of their demonstrated interest in conservation matters, and serve without compensation. Buchanan County Conservation Board members and the expiration dates of their terms are as follows: Gary Buresh (12-31-08), Jim Klever (12-31-09), Ranor Hoffman (12-31-10), Patricia Fencl (12-31-11), and Roger Johnson (12-31-12).

The Board functions as a corporate body, making group policy decisions regarding facilities, natural resource areas, environmental education, development of recreation areas, and other departmental policy. Conservation Board policies are implemented by the Executive Director, who is responsible to the Board. Other staff are hired by the Executive Director with Board approval, and are directly responsible to the Executive Director.  The Buchanan County Conservation Department consists of expert staff in the areas of natural resources and environmental education. 

The Conservation Department headquarters are located at Fontana Park Interpretive Nature Center, 9 miles north of Independence on Hwy 150. Exhibits in the Nature Center help visitors understand how we can "make our home in a living environment." As visitors explore the nature center and outdoor wildlife exhibit they experience natural objects, play games, and find answers to questions.
